The south facing southern scarp is much subdued. Above: CCW geologist Bob Mathews examining sandstone bedding-planes with current markings, typical of those seen within turbidite sequences, at New Quay on the Ceredigion coast. The more coarse-grained sands and gravels (units Qmsc and Qmsd) are primarily recognized on the basis of bathymetry and high backscatter. Rather than think of ancient soil horizons then, one must start thinking in terms of ancient water horizons. While his descriptions of the Canyon, supplemented with artwork by Thomas Moran, caught the public’s imagination, many still judged implausible his argument that slow, steady erosion created the Grand Canyon. Images of the Grand Canyon are featured prominently on the cover of many geology textbooks. The system responded immediately near the river mouth by incising, but it took time for the effect of the baselevel to propogate upstream.

Further confirmation was obtained that the Mackinac Channel was a subaerial river channel when spruce stumps, rooted and in the growth position, were discovered at 35-40m depth in the Straits of Mackinac. The name ‘Holocène’ (= ‘wholly recent’) was subsequently suggested by Paul Gervais (1867, vol. 2, p. 32), and the term ‘Holocene’ as a synonym for ‘Recent’ was ratified at the Third International Geological Congress in London in 1885.

Examples of the many laboratory facilities available for geoarchaeology and Quaternary studies include the soils and geomorphology (Geography), palynology (Geography), rock magnetic (Geology), isotope (Geography, Geology), lithic analysis (Anthropology), GIS (Geography), and remote sensing (Geography, Kansas Applied Remote Sensing Program) laboratories. Included among these processes are weathering, the breakdown of rocks and minerals at or near the surface of Earth due to physical or chemical processes; erosion, the movement of soil and rock due to forces produced by water, wind, glaciers, gravity, and other influences; and mass wasting or mass movement, the transfer of earth material, by processes that include flow, slide, fall, and creep, down slopes.
